The MOT or Ministry of Transportation of the United Kingdom introduced a test which helps in ensuring that the vehicle is safe for driving on one road. This great initiative by the government has not only helped in extending the lives of the vehicles, but has also proven beneficial for the safety and betterment of the environment. But what exactly is this MOT test? In this blog, we are going to help you by providing you complete details related to this test and also give you a detailed breakdown about it.
What Is MOT?
MOT or MOT test is a test introduced by the Ministry of Transportation of the United Kingdom. This test is like a checkup of your vehicle in which various elements of your vehicle are analyzed to ensure that they are working properly and does not in any way harm you or the public on the road. There are more than 23,500 local car repair garages throughout England, Scotland and Wales which are authorized to take this test.
Classes Of MOT Test
Various classes have been divided under which the vehicles are examined. Different kinds of vehicles are given a different class. Here is a list of all the classes and the vehicles examined under them:
Class I- Bikes that are under 200cc.
Class II- All kinds of bikes.
Class III- All 3 wheeler vehicle which has a weight of under 450 kgs.
Class IV- Includes 3 wheelers with weight more than 450 kg and taxis, minibuses and ambulances up to twelve passenger seats.
Class V- Private passenger vehicles, ambulances, motor caravans and dual purpose vehicles which are more than 13 seaters.
Class VII- Goods carrying vehicle which weighs more than 3000 kg including 3,500 kg DGW.
PSV test (Class VI)- Includes public service vehicles. There is a difference with the testing of this class as the test is conducted at DVSA/DVA staff their own stations, or at DVSA-authorised testing facilities.
Aspects Covered Under MOT Test
Various changes have been made throughout the years on the list of the parts tested and checked under the MOT test. So, here is the updated list of all the parts of a vehicle tested under this test:
Exhaust and emissions
Seat belts
Steering
Windscreen
Bonnet catch
Horn
Number plate
Lights
Brakes
Tyres and wheels
Mirrors
Doors
Seats
Suspension
Fuel system
Body and structure
Battery and wiring
As you can see this test does not include the engine (other than the emissions), clutch or gearbox. The test is done only to ensure the proper function of the car, not the performance of the car. Many people also have this misconception that during this test the mileage of a vehicle is also affected. But it is just a myth. Yes, it is true that the mileage of your vehicle is recorded but it is for test purposes only and no tampering is done with the odometer of the vehicle.
Exemption In MOT Test
One major point that you should know about the MOT test is that not all the vehicles are tested under this test. If a vehicle is older than 40 years and no big modifications or changes are made to it in the last 30 years, then there is no need for you to get the vehicle MOT tested. But not testing the vehicle does not mean that you are free to drive it on the road. The vehicle should be in proper condition and should be safe for driving.
Taking An MOT Test
As we have already said, the British government has given the license to more than 23,500 local car repair garages throughout England, Scotland and Wales to take this test. This means that even if you are in a remote area you can find a garage or an auto repair shop where you can get this test taken. For example, if you are living in Cardiff and you want to know where you can take this test, then all you need to do is go to your browser, search for MOT Cardiff, and you will get a list of all the garages and their contact information where you can get the test done. You should ensure that the vendor where you are going to give this test has a “VT9A Fees and Appeals” poster on display as mandatory by the government. This list is a fee chart for the maximum fees that you need to pay for your test.
MOT Test Results
After the test is done, now is the time for the result. There are only 2 outcomes to this test, either you pass or fail. The pass result means that your car is safe to drive on the road. But if there is any kind of problem with the part tested in this, then your vehicle will fail the test. You will have a time of 10 working days to retake the test and in these 10 working days you can work on the issue that your vehicle is having like changing the parts. After this retake the test and if the problem is resolved then you will be given the certificate for passing the test.
